I wanted to reach you as soon as possible, and for this reason am sending this printed letter, rather than a more personal message. The NAACP is experiencing a most serious financial situation. In 1978, black Americans were besieged on almost every front, from the Bakke decision to the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party. The call upon NAACP services was overwhelming. We responded to every demand that we possibly could. The toll upon our staff and resources was unprecedented. As a result, we find ourselves in the financial predicament described in the enclosed December 21st New York Times article. The NAACP dares not enter 1979 in a depleted condition that could cripple our ability to provide desperately needed protection and services. We are struggling to replenish the resources required for the struggle now upon us. If there is any way you can help, I urge you to do so at this time. I would be personally grateful for your help. Tax deductible emergency contributions may be made to the NAACP Special Contribution Fund. Sincerely, [[signature]] Benjamin L. Hooks Secretary JOIN THE N.A.A.C.P. TODAY 105
