DELTA SIGMA THETA, INC.
A Public Service Sorority

ORGANIZATION:
  
At the inception of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., founded in 1913 at Howard University, the Founders envisioned an organization of college women pledged to serious endeavor and community service. These youthful students demonstrated vital concern for social welfare, academic excellence, cultural enrichment, and de-emphasizing the social side of Sorority life. Their ideas of scholarship and service have withstood the test of time. Today Delta Sigma Theta is a public service Sorority emphasizing scholarship and character, dedicated to a program of sharing membership skills and organizational services in the public interest. In 1930, Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated as a national organization. The record of incorporation is filed in Washington, D.C.

MEMBERSHIP:
  
There are over 95,000 members. There are 610 chapters grouped into seven regions according to their geographic area. They are located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Republics of Haiti and Liberia. The members are college graduates or pursuing a degree in an accredited college or university.

NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS:
  
The organization has maintained a professionally staffed National Headquarters operation since 1952. It is located at 1707-1709 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT:
  
Mrs. Thelma T. Daley, Director of Career Education Programs, Baltimore County Board of Education, Baltimore, Maryland.

PRESIDENT EMERITUS:
  
Mrs. Sadie T. M. Alexander, Attorney, first Black woman to receive the Ph.D. degree in the United States.
