• Delta was funded for three years by the National Urban Coalition and Health Manpower Development Program to implement a Health Careers Information Project in 30 urban communities. The purpose of this project was to inform high school teachers, school administrators, and counselors of the availability of Health Careers and training for young people with a view to increasing the number of poor and minority group youth entering these fields. Fifty-eight chapters are continuing the program.

• The Organization also conducted a Right to Read Program in the District of Columbia, which was funded for four years by the Office of Education. This volunteer tutorial program provided learning experiences for the functionally illiterate for the purpose of helping them read well enough to qualify for job opportunities and/or job training. Young adults and returning veterans were tutored within public housing units. More than one hundred chapters are currently involved in similar tutorial and counseling programs.

• An eighteen-month program for the rehabilitation of women offenders at Alderson Reformatory for Women, Alderson, West Virginia, was funded to Delta and One America, Inc., in September 1971 by LEEA, U.S. Department of Justice. The program offered pre-release guidance and training and post-release rehabilitative assistance in 15 selected cities. The overall program was administered by One America with post-release activities coordinated by Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., and the United Church of Christ. Several chapters have continued the thrust of the pilot program in their communities.

• Since the summer of 1964, Delta has sponsored the Delta Teen-Lift, a career motivation program. Groups of teenagers have traveled through states visiting educational, cultural, and business institutions along the way in an effort to interest them in higher education. Each student's total expenses are paid by Delta Sigma Theta. Three hundred or more Delta chapters sponsor similar programs within their local communities.

• The Delta Home for Girls is sponsored by the Detroit Alumnae Chapter and has been in continuous operation for more than 30 years as a local chapter project. It has provided a home for disadvantaged young women, 13-17 years of age, most of whom have been referred to the Home from the Juvenile Court. More than seven hundred young women have been served to date.

• Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., was awarded a grant by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to conduct a project entitled "Educational Equity Training and Self-Assessment Project." The purpose of the project is to develop and test materials to be used by personnel of public and private institutions and community groups in an effort to combat sex stereotypes, sex discrimination and to promote educational equity for women.

• Public service workshops, sponsored by Delta, are an important tool in providing opportunities for women of diverse backgrounds to share common experiences. The workshops serve as catalysts and vehicles for developing strategies in meeting community needs.

• Executive Leadership Training laboratories are conducted annually for chapters. Delta maintains a computerized skills resource bank which is a valuable tool with immeasurable potential. The data on Deltas can be used to aid in the planning of Delta program thrusts; to identify the skills and educational backgrounds of membership; to aid in the recommending of sorors to serve on committees and Boards of Directors of other organizations and agencies; to assist in the making of job referrals; to identify special interests and to give the organization the knowledge of who it is and what it is about.
