EASTERN AIRLINES HOST "FLIGHT IN FANTASY" FOR OIC

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT was the setting for a most unique affair when members of the Philadelphia OIC Auxiliary (POICA) hosted a "Flight in Fantasy" via Eastern Airlines. In fact, the event was so "special" Eastern's national vice president, James Plinton, flew up from Miami, Fla., to participate on this occasion. Upon entering Eastern's terminal, passengers were "greeted" with television monitors flashing the "Flight in Fantasy's" gate location of the L1011 Whisperliner jet which had just arrived from Bermuda. POICA members and their guests were given boarding passes and seat assignments.

Also greeting guests were young adults from Heritage House. There ten persons (eight young women and two young men) had previously been trained — in a three hour session — at Cargo City to be flight attendants. For the gala affair, Eastern flew its food supervisor, Ms. Jean Garrett, from Miami to do the training. Each of the young people were given "Wings" insignias to be worn during the flight and kept as mementos of the "flight." Mrs. Vera Gunn-Harden, executive director of Heritage House, coached and groomed the young adults in preparation for this new and exciting role they would play for the evening. The excellent meal and complimentary wine served was planned by an OIC trainee and graduate, Ms. Bettye Wood.

THE GRAND PRIZE, hotel accommodations for one year at the Sheraton Colonial Hotel, Nassau, Bahamas, was donated by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism by their representative G. McNair Brown. A second grand prize was given by Ms. Olga Hodge of Soul Scissors and other prizes including flight bags, golf balls and the like were contributions of Eastern Airlines. All proceeds went to the OIC scholarship fund.

The program chairman was OIC auxiliary president Delores T. Williams, assistant professor at Temple University. She was ably assisted by the ticket chairman, Doris Thornton. All arrangements by Eastern Airlines were coordinated and supervised by sales representative Angela Johnson, assisted by customer service representative, Joseph Mancuso; dining services manager, J. D. Miles; supervisor of dining services, Rodney Dickerson and Mercedes Sala, Joann Pavlick and Dave Lamb.

ANOTHER EXCITING HIGHLIGHT of the "flight" was the fashion show by Eastern flight attendants, all of whom are based in Newark, N.J., but volunteered to fly into Philadelphia and participate in this worthy endeavor. The garments modeled were uniforms worn by stewardesses from 1933 to 1977. Obvious to all were the influences of the time in the styles of the uniforms, which ran from the Eleanor Roosevelt-look to the Jackie Kennedy silhouette and from those inspired by the military garb to the controversial "hot pants."

Seen in the passenger lounge were ARA's vice president, "Chuck" Sterling; Attorney and Mrs. Clarence Hoover, Mrs. Lottie Shaw, wife of the chairman of the Board of OIC; Margaret Beach, Bob and Mildred Gaines, Trudy Haynes-Pinder, Mitchell Harden, Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Ottley, Caroline Baxter, Walter and Beverly Marlin, Florence Williams, Rosalind Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Colbert, Jeanette Gorham, Thelma Coles, Leon Johnson, Carol Braxton and Gladys and Alice Roye.

Also attending were Irene Spearman, Nettice Luchie, Jr., Elizabeth Wheeler, Minnie Jones, Sylvia Wooten, Wilamenia Howell, Barbara Sye, Mildred Adams, Lucille Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Barbour, Libby Spencer and many many others. Enjoying the "flight," too, were a number of children and teenagers from North Philadelphia who were under the kind and loving supervision of Lillia "(MOM") Crippen. In addition, there were a number of senior citizens present who were experiencing a first time on board an aircraft.

PHILADELPHIA OIC AUXILIARY members are Margaret Barlow, Lillia Crippens, Elmora Earle, Ester Williams, Katherine Wade, Sarah Posey, Hessie Jones, Vera Gunn-Harden, Gertruce Washington, Irene Minyard, Imogene Anderson, Veronica Anderson, Laura Evans, chaplain; Leatrice Bennett, vice-president; Sandra Wilson, secretary; Mary Grice, Theresa Hoover, legal advisor; Frances Turner, Lucille Friday, Mary Chesney, Audrey Buchannan, Betty Thompson, Delcia Scott, Mary Miller, Katherine Weaver, Clementine Carroll, POIC liaison; Ola Hannah, treasurer; Clara Waugh, and Josie Johnson, assistant treasurer.
