NATIONAL BUSINESS LEAGUE CHARTS 78th ANNUAL CONVENTION SUCCESS
Based upon the theme "Jobs through Enterprise," the nation's oldest business association brought together a wide range of delegates from the minority private sector, government agencies and private industry to Nashville, Tennessee, for its 78th Annual Convention.

The four-day program included educational workshops and seminars, plenary sessions, a Town Meeting, two official luncheons and the Annual Awards Banquet. In addition, two innovative features - the highly acclaimed Certificate Institute series and the Procurement Contact Center - rounded off the educational agenda and provide a forum for direct contact between corporate procurement officials and potential minority vendors.

Among the national experts and government officials who served as panelists and guest speakers were Benjamin Hooks, Executive Director of the NAACP; Joan Wallace, Assistant Secretary for Administration - U.S. Department of Agriculture; Curtis McClinton, Director of Special Projects for the Economic Development Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce; S. David Freeman, Chairman, Tennessee Valley Authority; Dr. Randolph T. Blackwell, Director, Office of Minority Business Enterprise (OMBE); and John D. deButts, Chairman, AT&T, who served as Honorary Convention Chairman.

In ceremonies that concluded the Convention, NBL honored the outstanding achievements of individuals, companies and organizations that have significantly supported minority economic development. NBL's highest award, the Booker T. Washington Symbol of Service award was presented to D.C. Delegate Walter E. Fauntroy in recognition of his work to assure the enfranchisement of D.C. residents.

Saluting their joint achievements in the business field, Lee and Rose Elder received the A.G. Gaston Businessman of the Year Award.

Civil rights activist and businessman Calvin Rolark, publisher of the Washington Informer newspaper and Chairman of Black Media, Inc., received the Roscoe Dungee Civil rights in Business Award for his achievements in the field of communications.

In honor of his outstanding contributions to the field of business education, and his service as the National Faculty Advisor for the National Student Business League, Percy J. Vaughn Jr., Dean of the School of Business, Alabama State University, was awarded the Robert Russa Moton Leadership Award.

In recognition of his distinguished record of public service, Alexander Heard, Board Chairman of the Ford Foundation and Chancellor of Vanderbilt University, received the J.E. Walker Humanitarian Award.

As an outstanding government official dedicated to minority advancement, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, was awarded the J.C. Napier Government Man of the Year Award.

For leadership in the insurance industry's efforts to revitalize urban centers, Alan
