Distinguished Achievement Award Recipient

J. BRUCE LLEWELLYN

J. Bruce Llewellyn is President of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the profit-making governmental agency which provides loans, guarantees, and risk insurance to foster American investment in developing countries. The appointment, made by President Carter, represents a continuation of Mr. Llewellyn's outstanding record of distinguished achievement and service in both public and private sectors.

Starting in the late 1960s, Mr. Llewellyn built a successful 21-store supermarket chain, Fedco Foods, which ranks third in the Black Enterprise list of the 100 top minority firms. He was president of the influential 100 Black Men in New York City, which he was instrumental in developing. Earlier, he directed the federal anti-poverty program's Small Business Development Corporation. served as deputy commissioner on the New York City Housing and Development Administration, and was Chairman of the Board of Harlem's Freedom National Bank. He also served as New York Regional Director of the Small Business Administration and was an attorney with the firm of Evan, Berger & Llewellyn. 

Mr. Llewellyn was born in New York City and has an MBA from the Columbia Graduate School of Business; an MPA from the New York University School of Public Administration; and an LLB from New York Law School.

He has been board chairman of the New York Urban Coalition Venture Capital Corporation; Co-Chairman of the New York ICBO; member of the National Board of ICBO. He is a member of the Harlem Lawyers Association and the New York State Food Merchants. He is on the board of directors of New York Medical-Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital; the 20th Century Fund; and Remic. He is a trustee of City College and of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is listed in Who's Who in America.
