The initial purpose was to create a social outlet for the women nvolved. The Squaws soon became actively involved in the are of civic responsibility. Feeling the need for expansion and growth in this area, the Squaws applied for and received their charter in 1962, thereby making the Pittsburgh group the "founding chapter." In this same year, The Squaws became the proud possessors of a life membership in the NAACP. Chapter affiliations became effective as follows: Philadelphia 1964 Detroit 1967 Benton Harbor 1970 Cleveland 1970 Toledo 1970 Charlotte 1970 Durham 1972 Savannah 1973 Dallas 1973 Fort Worth 1974 Washington 1975 Houston 1975 Atlanta 1977 Springfield 1977 Tulsa 1978 The National Project in 1976 was Hypertension Research. At present, the National Project is NAACP. Husbands of Squaws play an extremely important role outside the official structure of the organization and are known as "The Braves."
