Membership in the Society is a signal honor for it is confined to those individuals who have already exhibited over a period of time an understanding and support of the work of the NUL, as well as those who wish to do so. Thus the Society brings together former staff members of Leagues all across the country, former board members, former Guild members and other volunteers, those who have been aided in their careers by the League, contributors and friends of the Urban League Movement.

That means that membership cuts across all lines - economic, occupational, racial or whatever. The common thread that binds the members together is that their lives in some manner has been or will be touched by the Urban League.

Volunteerism has always been an important part of the Urban League Movement, beginning at its inception when volunteers came together to create the structure that was eventually to become the National Urban League. Through membership in the Julius A. Thomas Society the individual is provided with an opportunity to continue a long standing tradition.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE JULIUS A. THOMAS SOCIETY?
* To recognize alumni and friends who are vitally concerned and active in the efforts of the Urban League Movement.
* To promote increased interest in the welfare of the Urban League Movement on the part of others who might become members of the Julius A. Thomas Society.
* To offer members opportunities to meet with peers, for personal and professional enrichment.
* To grant recognition to members of the Society who make significant contributions to the NUL.
* To help establish an exemplary pattern of annual giving.
