Black society salutes its [[continued]]

Gerri Major, society writer with an international following, celebrated her 85th birthday with a party put together by Ben Write and Flo Thornley, Jimmy Little, and a redoubtable committee. Rain, after weeks of hot, doggy weather, dashed the streets with welcome wet water as the party started. Nearly 400 friends came out last Sunday to wish Gerri many more happy birthdays. Regal as ever, the doyen of Black American society received a continuing stream of names, gifts, bouquets, and plaques. One gift was a miniature house made entirely of money, all five dollar bills, no small denominations. Gerri wore a black and white print caftan-styled chiffon gown with ropes of precious jewels, bracelets, and rings. At 85 she continues to travel around the world when the mood and the details include some obscure place she has never been. Gerri knows presidents of most African nations, and her journeys throughout the West Indies are legion. She can name every important Black person who ever lived and worked in Paris, France; London, Rome, Madrid, and Tokyo. Ben Wright's double penthouse, with a flower-filled terrace circling the building's four sides accosted the flow of fachionable, very social crowd.
