National President Dr. Fredda Witherspoon. "The wife of a prominent St. Louis attorney, she is typical of the many determined women of a minority race throughout our nation who have performed yeoman duty in the multiple roles of wife, mother, homemaker, breadwinner, church and civic worker, and student." . . . Among her numerous responsibilities besides that of college professor, she serves as Missouri State President-NAACP; Immediate Past President of the St. Louis Metropolitan YWCA — the first Black to be elected to that post in its more than 70 year old history; President of her campus chapter—American Association of University Professors, and serves on several Boards of Directors, including Vice Presidency of the Urban League of St. Louis. She was the organizer of the St. Louis Bar Auxiliary and of the National Barristers Wives and served as the first President of both organizations . . . Holder of three Masters' degrees and a Ph.D., she has received numerous awards for her community involvement, Dr. Witherspoon received the Sorority's highest national award — the Lola M. Parker Achievement Award — in 1970 and was elected National President in 1977. 269
