NEW YORK URBAN LEAGUE TO HONOR LEGENDARY HARLEM PHYSICIAN, DR. MAY EDWARD CHINN

The legendary Harlem physician Dr. May Edward Chinn will be the guest of honor at the annual New Year's Reception of the Manhattan branch of the New York Urban League on Sunday, January 13, 1980, 6:00-10:00 P.M. at the Tower Suite in the Time-Life Building.

The annual reception, which is co-sponsored by the Junior League of the Cit yof New York, is the major fund raising event of the New York Urban League's Manhattan Branch at 204 West 136th Street. "Without the annual reception proceeds, we could not support our many employment, housing and education programs in central Harlem and other parts of Manhattan," said Alvin Bragg, director of the New York Urban League Manhattan Branch.

Horace W. Morris, executive director of the New York Urban League, said, "We're delighted to recognize Dr. May Chinn. As one of the few practicing Black physicians in Harlem for many years, Dr. Chinn is well known and loved in the Harlem community. We honor her years of dedicated service."

Dr. Chinn was the first Black woman graduate of Bellevue Hospital Medical College, the first Black woman intern at Harlem Hospital, and was for years, the only Black doctor in private practice in Harlem. She was elected to the prestigious Society of Surgical Oncology, was appointed to the Surgeon General's Advisory Committee on Urban Affairs, and in 1977, joined the staff of the Strang Clinic. Still in private practice today, Dr. Chinn is concurrently medical consultant to 100 African student refugees.

This year's reception is chaired by Manhattan Borough Board member Lois T. Williams, and co-chaired by Carolyn Lee Smith, president of the Junior League of the City of New York. Committee members also include: Linda Miller Bain, W. Harmon Brown, Arthur Carlisle, Ellen Dammond, Elaine Parker, Elizabeth Patton, Bernice David Power and Paul Stafford.
