Mrs. Stephens is a former member of the Detroit Chapter and a Past National First Vice President. She was the Chicago Chapter's Media Woman of the year.

National Association of Media Women authors were cited in a special "Author's Spotlight" program at the Fourteenth Annual Convention held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in New York City. Left to right: Cosdena Thomas Gunn, Flint, Michigan, Mae Johnson Simmons, Flint, Michigan and Birmingham-born Ellen Tarry, a Founding member of the Metropolitan New York Chapter which hosted the convention and which was cited as Outstanding Chapter of the year.

Mary Burke Nicholas, member of Governor Hugh Carey's Cabinet and Director of the Women's Division for New York State presents the Governor's Proclamation of October 18, 1979 as Media Women's Day in New York State to Helene Southern Slater, President of the Metropolitan New York Chapter. Mrs. Slater won the President's Award for outstanding service to the National President and the Metropolitan New York Chapter was cited as Outstanding Chapter of the Year.
