HISTORY-THE NATIONAL CLUB OF CHI WIVES-1967-1980
ORGANIZATION
Chi Delta Mu men enjoy each other! That is contagious! The wives of "Chi" men enjoy each other, too-so much so that in 1947 wives of the District of Columbia (Lambda) Chapter formed a club. Their purpose was to become better acquainted with each other, and thus to serve their husbands more effectively whenever called upon. This warm and wifely purpose grew into varying forms of civic and social endeavors.
The idea soon achieved national popularity. The National Club of Chi-Wives was organized April 18, 1949, during the National conclave of Chi Delta Mu Fraternity which was held in the Provident Professional Club of Brooklyn, New York. Interested brothers who encouraged and assisted with the ladies' organization were Dr. Phillip Johnson, Grand President, Washington, D.C.; Dr. George G. Adams of Baltimore, Maryland and Dr. Charles Cephas of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
With Mrs. Josephus C. Carr (Nellie) of Newark as chairman and organizer, the ladies present on that day became the charter members of the National Club of Chi Wives. They were:
Mrs. George Adams (Glodine)
Mrs. McDonald Bando (Thelma)
Mrs. Alexander Bell (Alice)
Mrs. Arthur D. Carr (Lelia)
Mrs. John C. Carr (Mildred)
Mrs. Josephus Cephas (Bessie)
Mrs. Theodore R. George (Emma
Mrs. Horace I. Hamlet (Irene
Mrs. Julius Hines (Olive, D.D.S.)

Mrs. William T. Randall (Jewell)
Mrs. E. Walter Shervington (Charlotte)
Mrs. A. Garland Smyer (Catherine)
Mrs. Leroy D. Thompson (Juanita)

After deciding to organize, the first order of business was the election of officers. The first officers were as follows:

Mrs. Charles Cephas (Bessie) Vice President
Mrs. Julius Hines (Olive, D.D.S.) Secretary
Mrs. Alexander Bell (Alice) Treasurer

Mrs. Arthur D. Carr (Lelia) D.C.
Mrs. Phillip Johnson (Hortense) D.C., Chairman
