Ralph Johnson Bunche was one of the most distinguished citizens of the United States and the world. He has been aptly called "a successful practitioner of man's noblest profession, the quest for peace."
Peace Form One is a sculptured 50-foot stainless steel obelisk. It is a memorial to Ralph Bunche, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs of the United Nations.
The monument, designed by artist Daniel LaRue Johnson, has been erected in the Ralph J. Bunche Park located across the street from the United Nations. Peace Form One was conceived in memory of Dr. Bunche as a symbol of man's renunciation of war and corruption.
The Phelps-Stokes Fund is the sponsoring agency of the Ralph J. Bunche Memorial Project and the campaign to build the monument has been led by the Fund's president Franklin H. Williams.
