Welcome to New England
"SCAPES"
NEW WORKS BY TEIXEIRA
WAS ON VIEW IN THE ART GALLERY
HARLEM STATE OFFICE BUILDING

"'SCAPES' by Teixeira," An exhibit of 60 art pieces in tapestries, painting, prints and photographs by the artist-author, Mrs. Teixeira Nash, was displayed at the Harlem State Office Building from January 12 through February 1.

Mrs. Nash, who chose the "multitude of media" to express "the multiple images of the sky above, the earth below and the living creatures all around," discussed her works during a reception on the 2nd floor between 2 and 6 p.m. January 11th.

Brought to Harlem by the Pan Helenic Council to expose young blacks to the works of professional black artists, the showing marked the first time "SCAPES" was shown in the New York Metropolitan area.

Commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976, the works have been praised by art critics in other parts of the United States.

One critic, writing in the Washington Post declared, "there is something strong, simple and loving about the work of Teixeira...Teixeira takes a single subject, the human form, and sprawls its simplified black and white shape against a contrapuntal pattern of forceful geometric images."

"The subjects of the paintings are seen with warmth; in fact much of Teixeira's work has alyrical tenderness," the critic wrote.

Mrs. Nash, in earlier talks on her works, has often said she is a "figurative painter" or one that concentrates on the human form.

From that basic interest, she found influences affecting her works from her own New England birthplace; living in West Africa and also from a deep involvement in the civil rights movement.

Contending that she "wants ideas to flow from people," Mrs. Nash has said the "SCAPES" exhibit was her own translation
