CAMP ATWATER REOPENS
Camp Atwater, in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, founded by Dr. William N. DeBerry in 1921 and one of the oldest and most prominent camps of its kind in America reopened in 1980 after a seven-year hiatus.

Located on beautiful Lake Lashaway, Atwater includes 70 acres of woodland, 24 buildings, a 3-acre island off the mainland, basketball and tennis courts and a contemporary waterfront pier.

Owned by the Springfield Urban League, Camp Atwater is the only remaining Urban League Camp in the nation and the oldest damp serving a  primarily black camper population. Campers receive a well rounded and diversified educational and camping experience. 

The reopening ceremonies, a triumphant event, attracted over 400 well-known personalities (alumni and friends), from across the country including the following members of the National Advisory Committee: R. Turner Dickerson, Alexander B. Mapp, Alma Arrington Brown, Allyson Buggs, Howard Edmonds, William Gardner, Ron Payne, Adelaide Cromwell Gulliver, Elma Lewis, Dr.Olivia Hooker, George Yancey, Representative Raymond A. Jordan, Jr., Ann Tannyhill, Rev. Ronald Peers, Attorney Arthur Young and Dr. Moreland Fort.

Some of the other guests were, Ron Brown, chief counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee; Elizabeth Yancey, Assistant Superintendent of Schools (D.C.); J. Taber Bolden, senior vice-president N.B.C., La Verne and Kendall Flowers, Margaret Hand Salisbury, Henrietta Franklin, Zella Crawford Jackson, A.W.
