Black Achievers In Industry

As the Harlem Branch YMCA celebrates eighty years of dedicated service to the community, we look forward to a growth and a renaissance unparalleled in our history. When I accepted the position of Executive Director several months ago, I recognized areas of untapped potential which, once actualized, could significantly enhance our ability to provide a more diverse range of services to youth and adults.

The Black Achievers who will be honored this evening, as well as previous achievers, have the ability to contribute greatly to our work with youth. A minimum of one hour each month spent by a Black Achiever working with our youth in career-development counseling, cultural enrichment or our tutorial program could positively redirect a young person's life.

While strengthening and developing our traditional youth and adult programs, we are exploring and testing new ways to offer better services and activities. Public speaking, dance, theater and computer science are only a few of the new and expanded programs planned for the near future. The Harlem Y's physical education and health facilities are getting a new look which we anticipate will add to our membership and to our corps of volunteers, upon which we depend quite heavily.
