"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daylight of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality."

On receiving the Nobel Prize for Peace

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
1929-1968

The Nobel Peace Prize:
Martin Luther King--(1964)

The announcement of Martin Luther King's reception of the 1964 Nobel Peace Price signaled a moment of enormous pride and immense jubilation for the American Negro. For the first time, there was a degree of official international recognition connected with his struggle. There was a sense that the nonviolent aspects of the civil rights revolution had captured the attention of the world.

Dr. King received his award in Oslo, Norway on December 10, 1964. At 35, he became the youngest man in history to have won the coveted distinction.
