In the early part of 1937 at the Upper Manhattan Branch of the YMCA in New York City, a group of about twenty-five college trained women, who were engaged in various professions and businesses were called together by the late Florence K. Williamson Norman to discuss plans for the organization of a Greek letter sorority. These women, sincere in the right of their convictions, began to lay the groundwork necessary to set in motion machinery for a National Sorority of Negro Business and professional women to be known as Lambda Kappu Mu. None of this could have been achieved without the capable legal assistance rendered by a very young lawyer who was at the beginning of her career, Jane M. Bolin.

On January 19, 1937, Lambda Kappa Mu sorority was founded. At that point Ms. Bolin set into motion the machinery which would result in a state charter. By February, 1938 the group had adopted its ritual pledges. flower, colors and password as well as its motto and pin. 

The Certificate of incorporation was issued by secretary of state in accordance with the laws of the state of New York on March 16, 1938. During the interim between January 19th, 1937 and March 16th, 1938,
