BROOKLYN CHAPTER OF LINKS

Background
The Links, Inc. with national headquarters in Washington, D.C. was founded in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1946 by Sarah Scott and the late Margaret Hawkins. There are now chapters in 33 states and the District of Columbia with a membership of over 4900.

The Brooklyn Chapter is one of 173 chapters in the national organization of black [[??]] linked together through bonds of friendship and committed to service in behalf of [[??]], cultural endeavors and to improving the quality of life.

The Links' national programs provide enrichment experiences for the educationally disadvantaged and cultural deprived and support talented and creative young people.

Brooklyn Chapter

1. Reaches out to help youth through its Salute to Youth Project.
2. Recognizes and supports creative artists
a. Exhibits artists' works;
b. Cites creative professionals at special events
3. Assists local service organizations to meet the needs of people by volunteer service
4. Gives substantial funds through the national headquarters to:
a. NAACP;
b. Legal Defense Fund;
c. United Negro College Fund;
d. National Urban League; 
e. Sickle Cell Research;
f. Special Projects

Local Contributions
Brooklyn Museum; 
Negro Ensemble Company;
Schomburg Collection;
Urban League;
Other worthy community agencies

5. Responds to special concerns on an international level

e.g. contribution to building wells in Kenya.

The chapter works under the four national program facets, National Trends and Services to Youth but we have selected Salute to Youth as our primary focus.

Salute to Youth, Inc.--

our non-profit corporation to serve the needs of youth. (All contributions are tax deductible).

Salutes 1980 to the present recognized outstanding Juniors in Bedford-Stuyvesant high schools in the areas of scholarship and community service. These Salutes awarded and presented audition winners in the field of art, dance, drama music and creative writing. During the years more than 100 students have been auditioned.

1970--Experimental Human Relations Workshop developed in cooperation with Long Island University and the New York City Youth Board who screened and selected the 15 participants.

1970 to present

Support of College Discovery Program and assistance in the selection and counselling of a group of students.

Other Activities

1. Four year scholarship in memory of Margaret W. Waters, member and chapter president.
2. Scholarships each year to other selected high school students.
3. Additional four year scholarships are planned.
