1981 Program Directions 1982 You + Commitment = Success 1. National Health Focus * Breast Self Examinations * Teenage Pregnancies - Birth Defects OBJECTIVES * Educate the Public on Breast Self Examinations. * Create Public Awareness of the High incidence of Cancer in Blacks (male and female). * Circulate updated information on detection symptoms, treatment. * Set up teenage workshop and discuss the aspects of the: Unborn Birth Defects Nutrition Pregnancies ACTIVITIES * Develop and present programs designed to encourage and teach. * Sponsor/organize or network with community. Organize panel discussions, lectures, slide presentations. * Present Bio Medical Career Days, or merge with existing Elementary, Junior and Senior High Career Days. * Organize field trips to local Bio-Medical facilities. * Initiate Cancer programs in Elementary Schools. * Set up student's on the job training program in health careers through school and community. * Direct tutoring program and transportation. * Provide student scholarships and transport- tation to science workshops. * Locate & identify gifted science & math students. II. Education * Poisonous Plant Displays * Bio-Medical Careers * Nutrition * Inform the Public on household & other plants that are poisonous. * Through Career Days on site visitation and commitment from medical establishment on the job training programs. * Inform local Junior and Senior High School students about Bio-Medical careers. * Provide nutritional experts in school assemblies. * Stimulate an interest in teenagers about good nutritional habits. III. Focus on Survival * Coping with stress of Cancer in the family. * Teenage alcoholism and suicide. * Mental Health. * Reduce Heart Attacks - establish better eating habits. * Child Care Center - Birth Defects, March of Dimes. OBJECTIVES - ACTIVITIES * Conduct Seminars, Lectures and Workshops on Breast Self Examination in schools, banks, clubs and organizations. * Conduct Youth Seminars, Lectures and/or Workshops with our children on Parenting, Socially Transmitted Diseases, Nutrition, Birth Defects, continued education after pregnancy. IV. Focus on Health Legislation * Keep informed and support legislation that affect: A. Our Spouse's Practice B. Our Communities C. Our Children D. Quality of Life (Health, energy, housing, youth & aged. V. Human Relations * To enhance activities that will spark sharing and caring. * Encourage activities involving the local, state, and regional members. * Induct new members into the auxiliary with membership card, certificate and history of the organization. * Honor a member who has made outstanding contributions to the auxiliary. * Sponsor a Doctor Day Program - Oldest, Youngest. Let the Community vote. * Organize a Mace Program to protect against rape, etc. * Organize a program to support Unwed Mothers, Battered Wives, Rape Victims, Needy Families Senior Citizens, and the Handicapped by networking with other organizations & local and state agencies. * Cancer kills 121 Blacks each day; about one every 12 minutes. * Breast Cancer in women has increased 25% in the last 25 years. * Cancer is the second largest leading cause of death in Blacks of all ages and the leading cause in women between the ages of 35-54. Initiate aggressive Membership Drives, Local, State and National Levels: Encourage male spouses to join. a. Renew present membership. b. Recruit and Orient New Members. c. Contact Intern's and resident's Spouses. d. Contact Spouses of Student NMA (future members). e. Plan a membership Social - Stress Friendship, Fellowship. f. Plan Initiation Ceremony - New Members. II. Develop a program for the Entire Year: a. Use the National Program Directions as a guide. BSE-Cancer Workshop. b. Assess Local Needs. c. Include the National Theme and Suggested Activities. d. Provide a well Planned Program with a balance of Purpose and Pleasure. e. Involve all Members. III. Conduct Officer and Leadership Orientation Sessions for newly elected Officers and Committee Chairpersons: a. Invite National Officers to support, participate and/or advise if needed. IV. Plan Regional and State Meetings early in the Year. If your Auxiliary is the host, work closely with your Regional Vice President. V. Meet Deadlines and Communicate: a. Communication is the life line that bridges the gap between local, state and national. *VI.
