The season in New York was highlighted by extensions of old productions, still playing to packed houses and the introduction of two new smash hits which had the theatre goers clamoring to get in.

The failure of the season was "The First" a play which attempted to depict Jackie Robinson's entrance into major league baseball.

The ever lovely Lena Horne starred in three extended engagements of her hit one woman show at the Nederlander Theatre on 41st Street.

The Negro Ensemble Company's 15th season began with a smash hit "A Soldier's Play," housed in their newly acquired Theatre Four.

The hottest ticket on Broadway was "Dream Girls" at the Imperial Theatre.

"The First" was an attempt to depict the circumstances around which Jackie Robinson broke into national baseball.
