NATIONAL BLACK VETERANS ORGANIZATION HONORS AUTHOR

The National Black Veterans Organization gave a resounding salute in honor of Cecil Peterson, author, teacher and Eleanor Roosevelt's friend and pen pal in March 1981 at the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom, Beverly Hills, California.
His book, "Diary of a Black G.I., Eleanor Roosevelt's Pen Pal," recounts his true experiences and his association with Mrs. Roosevelt for 40 years. Her son James Roosevelt has written the forward to the book. This success story would be little different from any such stories of dedicated and conscientious people, except for the fact that his mother died shortly after his birth and he was placed in different homes in the care of different agencies and could not read until the age of 15.
He met Mrs. Roosevelt or "Aunt Ellie," as he later called her, at a youth meeting and as of that meeting she took a genuine interest in his struggle for an education.
During his stint in the Armed Services she sent him letters and candy. While he was on Guadalcanal, Mrs. Roosevelt suggested to Admiral Halsey that Pvt. Peterson accompany her on her visit to the sick at the Marine Hospital.
Mr. Peterson was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant from the army and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at Long Island University. Mrs. Roosevelt attended his graduation and he was invited to Hyde Park to have dinner with the family to celebrate.
In conjunction with Carole Oligario, his book has been given a television treatment and is presently in the hands. of N.B.C. Carol Oligario is a Director and screen writer who recently was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Grant; she also teaches acting and screen writing at the University of Southern California.
Mr. Peterson lives in Los Angeles, California where he is busy working on another book that will deal with the contributions made by Blacks to the winning of World War II. He was married to Ellen Broady and they are the parents of two children, Melanie and Cecil Jr.
