MEDIA WOMEN MEET IN 16TH ANNUAL CONVENTION

17TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OCTOBER 13th to 17th, 1982
ATLANTA, GEORGIA

"For years we have been managed by the 'invisible' two sets of rules that have hindered our advancement. When we are managed by objectives we can grow. Joe Lewis and other fighters fall under the same set of rules, but the decisions on who will be the next governor, or the next editor of a major daily, or the next nightly news commentator, are played by two sets of rules. We are in search of new rules and a new contract and we want our share on the 'supply-side' of land, capital and ownership so that Blacks can develop in this country" stated Reverend Jesse Jackson, and president of Operation PUSH. He was guest speaker at the Awards banquet of the Sixteenth Annual Convention of the National Association of Media Women at the Westin Hotel, Renaissance Center, Detroit. Rev. Jackson warned that "black tax money is not being used for the development of Blacks and now is the time for economic reciprocity." He announced that PUSH has formed a Selective Patronage Council in the top fifty markets where black people live. "No product on the shelves can survive the withdrawal of black patronage" he declared, "and we must use our dollar as our major weapon in the arsenal of liberation." Rev. Jackson was presented a plaque by NAMW "for your continued fight for equal rights."
