The in-organization Ida B. Wells Media Woman of the Year Award, named for the pioneering black newswoman, the highest award given by NAMW, went to Jocelyn Dorsey, noon news anchor for WSB/TV-ABC, Atlanta. For the first time the Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award was shared by two chapters — Atlanta and Chicago. A Salute to Mayor Coleman A. Young was also presented by NAMW. Suzanne de Passe, President of Motown, received the National Achievement Award.

At the Saturday President's Luncheon, the outgoing National President, Xernona Clayton Brady, Atlanta, gave the President's Award to Ella Kay Mays, Beverly Hills, editor of "The Media Woman", NAMW's national journal and a past national president, for "outstanding service to the National President." Rose Matthews-Lewis, president of the 60-member Detroit Chapter, host to the convention, received a special Presidential Award. Marvin English, District Sales Manager of American Tobacco Company presented his company's check for $400 to the organization for scholarships. Mrs. Haley Bell, Chairman of the Board of Bell Broadcasting Company, received a citation from NAMW in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the company. Clem Childs of Eastern Airlines, who sponsored the luncheon, presented a silver bowl from his company to President Brady. Alberta Blackburn, Detroit Chapter member, Assistant to Mayer Coleman A. Young, gave NAMW's president the Mayor's Key, conferring honorary citizenship in Detroit and his proclamation in honor of NAMW's Sixteenth Annual Convention.

Since this was the president's last tour of duty she gave special citations to the following members, who, she said, had "gone that extra mile:" Lois K. Alexander, Founding member and past national president, New York; Dorothye Boswell, Alma Redick, Los Angeles; Ella Kay Mays, Beverly Hills; Esther Coley, Palm Springs; Azira Hill, Paulyne Morgan White, Oziel Woolcock, Atlanta; Ploy Stephens, Detroit; Mattie Smith Colin, Chicago; Helene Southern Slater, New York; Eleanor Haynes, Long Island; Ellen Tarry, Founding member, New York; Ruth Buckner, May Simmons and Cosdena Dunn, Flint. The president then received special gifts from Atlanta, Detroit, Flint, Chicago, Long Island and Metropolitan New York Chapters and the National Executive Board.
