Detroit Chapter member, City Council President Erma Henderson, the first black female to that office, in her keynote speech on Thursday, urged that her media sisters be prepared to "dig in for the truth in communications. If you are not communicating with your people not in the media you are not communicating. They are your Achillese heel and you cannot go any faster than they will let you go. The time has come for you and I to close ranks." She read and presented a testimonial resolution "Detroit City Council applauds NAMW for its outstanding contributions in the field of communications."

Frances Hooks represented her husband, Reverend Banjamin Hooks, Executive Secretary of the NAACP, the scheduled Founder's Luncheon speaker on Friday, because of his emergency call to Washington, D.C. She warned that the "Social clock of progress is ticking backward and we must be ever vigilant because there is racism in this country. Reagan is pulling black folk together because when he starts cutting back on things we discover that we have a commonality of purpose-to survive. Our heads are bloody but unbowed." Stating that the F.C.C. was the only regulatory agency that enforces the EEOC laws she urged that radio and TV stations be monitored, F.C.C. hearings be attended and an effort be made to get a black woman on the F.C.C.
