David N. Dinkins

David N. Dinkins, a member of the Manhattan District of the 369th Veterans' Association, was born on July 10, 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey, the first child of William H. and Sally Dinkins. He has a younger sister, Joyce Belton, still residing in Trenton. After receiving his early education in P.S. 5 and P.S. 90 in New York City, he was graduated from Trenton Central High School in June, 1945.

Soon after his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in July, 1945, and was stationed at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. Dave was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in August, 1946, with the rank of Private First Class. Following his military service, he entered Howard University, where he graduated-cum laude in 1950. Continuing his education, Dave enrolled in the Brooklyn Law School. In 1956 he was awarded an L.L.B. degree from Brooklyn Law School.

Also in 1956 Dave was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York, Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Judicial District; admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts.

Gordon Davis was born on August 7, 1941, on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois to W. Allison and Elizabeth Davis. He comes from a prominent family. His father is the John Dewey Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Chicago. His late mother was also an educator and social scientist. His older brother, Alison, is an attorney in Chicago. Mr. Davis is an honorary member of the 369th Veterans' Association.

Commissioner Davis is a 1963 graduate of Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, where he was a member of the basketball team, Vice President of Gargoyle, the senior honor society, and co-chairman and founder of the Williams College Civil Rights Committee. In 1963-64 he did graduate work in planning, architecture and political science at Columbia University. He completed his academic and professional training in 1967, when he was awarded a law degree from the Harvard University Law School.

He first joined the city government in 1967 when he was appointed as an assistant to the Budget Director under Mayor John V. Lindsay. In 1969 he was named Assistant to the Mayor. He also served as Secretary to the Mayor's Cabinet and as Special Assistant to the Mayor from 1971 to 1972. On January 1, 1973 he was appointed to an eight year term as a member of New York City's Planning Commission. Also, in 1973, Mr. Davis resumed private law practice when he joined the law firm of Poletti, Friedin, Prashker, Feldman and Gartner. Between 1974 and 1977, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of New York Magazine Company and for part of that time as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board.

LILLIAN ROBERTS
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Lillian Roberts, an honorary member of the 369th Veterans' Association, was born on January 2, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. After her graduation from Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, she attended the University of Illinois.

She was employed from 1965 to 1967 by District Council 37 as the Division Director, Hospital Division. In 1967 Ms. Roberts was appointed Associate Director for District Council 37.

District Council 37, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), has approximately 110,000 members and is New York City's largest union, and the largest union of municipal employees in the country. The union represents members in the traditional labor-management matters and in collective bargaining.

From 1958 to 1965, prior to coming to New York, Ms. Roberts was an organizer for District Council 19 and 34, Chicago, Illinois (State Mental Health Employees and Volunteer Hospital Employees). Ms. Roberts was employed by the University of Chicago, Lying In Hospital as an Operating Room Technician from 1951 to 1958 and as a Nurse's Aide from 1945 to 1951.

Ms. Roberts is a member of the Board of Directors of the following: Council on Health Care Financing of the State of New York, Carver Federal Savings and Loan Association, The Alvin Ailey City Center Dance Theater, Settlement Housing Fund, National Association on Drug Abuse Problems, N.Y. State Employment and Training Council, American Committee on Africa, Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution and the Workers Defense League. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York and the National Child Labor Committee.

She is a member of the N.Y. Advisory Committee, Center for Women in Government; member of the Sponsoring Committee for Cooperative and Labor Studies in Israel, Afro-Asian Institute Associates (Histadrut); the National Advisory Council, American Civil Liberties Union; the N.Y. City Commission of the Status of Women and the N.Y. State Advisory Council on Substance Abuse.

Ms. Roberts has received over twenty awards. On January 9, 1981 Governor Carey issued a proclamation designating the date as "Lillian Roberts Day".
