Museum of Art, Raleigh, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. In addition, Bearden has had over fifteen museum exhibitions and more than twenty gallery exhibitions at Cordier and Ekstrom Gallery, New York; Sheldon Ross Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan, and the 17 Wendall Street Gallery, Cambridge, Massachusetts, among others. He is also represented in many museum collections.

Romare Bearden has received numerous honors and awards, including five honorary doctorates and the medal of the State of North Carolina.

The exhibition presents fifty-six collages created between 1970 and 1980. Included are several well known works as well as pieces being exhibited for the first time. Although Bearden has worked in other media, including watercolor and oil on paper, he is best known for his bold and spirited collages, and this exhibition is limited to that medium.

Jerald L. Melberg, Curator of Exhibitions at the Mint Museum, selected the works for the exhibition and designed the installation.

Dore Ashton, nationally known and highly regarded art critic, and Albert Murray, distinguished novelist and essayist, have written perceptive essays for the catalogue, which includes over sixty illustrations, twenty-four of which are in full color.

Romare Bearden: 1970-1980 is organized by the Mint Museum, Department of Art, and is sponsored by Philip Morris Incorporated and the National Endowment for the Arts. Following its premiere presentation in Charlotte, North Carolina, the exhibition will be seen in Jackson, Mississippi; Baltimore, Maryland, and Richmond, Virginia.
