viously, racial discrimination continues to be a major problem in our society and blacks are rightfully concerned that past gains are in jeopardy.

Critical Areas Examined

Within the pages that follow, a number of distinguished scholars and writers have prepared perceptive papers that examine the present status of black Americans in a number of critical areas. Their contributions were brought together by the National Urban League to produce this seventh annual "State of Black America" report in the League's continuing effort to provide the American people with comprehensive insights into this much talked about but rarely fully understood sector of our society.

Each of the authors was left free to determine his or her own individual approach to the subject area so that the views reflected in the papers should not be construed as representing the official positions of the National Urban League. Our recommendations appear at the end of this document. And to each of our contributors, we say thanks.
