together which gave the University the dominant part of the project and the demise of its original founder.

But the politicians and the University did not take in full consideration the power of the community control and this delayed the hospital building. This too, aided Columbia more than Harlem and when the final plans were placed in execution Columbia brought in all their people and dominated.

And how this has affected the community for medicine on the whole is still debatable. I can personally attest to some bad treatment an elderly lady received from the Columbia people there in charge in the Emergency room at Harlem on New Years day. Dr. Richards a black female doctor who saw the lady, who was brought to Emergency in an ambulance, accused the ladies family of bringing her there to dump her so that they would be free to go out and party New Years Day. She utterly disregarded the fact that the lady had suffered a previous stroke and could not walk or speak and blind and her family was frightened becasue they thought that she had suffered another stroke.

After accepting the patient who was placed on a stretcher for some hours, the doctor in charge told the ladies family who asked for assistance to shut up, and don't tell her to talk about her condition because she had examined the frightened old lady and that she walked for them.
