Four Decades Serving the Urban League

The Urban League Beaux Arts Ball with which I was affiliated from 1948 when Gordon Parks took the picture of one of the last of them staged at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem on the opposite page; was and still is the brainchild of the indomitable Mollie Lee Moon. Together, with her group of loyal supporters, the Guild Beaux Arts Ball have provided funds for the Urban League and entertainment for countless thousands. The Beaux Arts Ball of 1982 is dedicated to promoting the American Art form—"Jazz". Johnny Vigal pictured here has been a permanent winner of the Beaux Arts Ball prizes for his outstanding costume. Also pictured on page are Lynette Gittoes, Josephine Bolder Edmond and her husband Howard, Gordon Park and Joe Boldon, Mrs. Edmond's son, Mr.& Mrs. Walter Haiman, President of Seagram Distillers and provider of the League's Vanguard Awards for service to the community.
