Exceptional Scientists... Exceptional Human Beings [[3 images]] Mathematician Dr. David Blackwell, chemical engineer Dr. Jennie Patrick and kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Samuel L. Kountz. They have made noteworthy contributions in mathematics, medicine and scientific research which have benefited people of all backgrounds, creeds and races. Emerging from rural backgrounds, all three went on to attend some of America's leading educational institutions and become pioneers in their fields. CIBA-GEIGY Corporation is proud to honor Dr. Blackwell, Dr. Patrick and Dr. Kountz in its 1983 Exceptional Black Scientists Poster Series and have them join nine other outstanding individuals who have been previously honored in the poster series. The others are chemist Dr. Percy L. Julian, physicians Dr. Charles R. Drew and Dr. Jane C. Wright in the 1980 series; anatomist and medical educator Dr. W. Montague Cobb, theoretical physicist Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, and biological researcher Dr. Ernest Everett Just in the 1981 series; and cell physiologist Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, chemist Dr. Lloyd N. Ferguson, and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Augustus A. White, III in the 1982 series. The Exceptional Black Scientists Poster Series was introduced in 1980 to help acquaint the general public with the accomplishments of some outstanding scientists and to encourage more minority students to pursue careers in science and medicine. The posters are made from portraits painted by noted black artist Ernest Crichlow and include brief biographies about the scientists. The large, color posters are available to high schools, colleges, libraries, civic organizations and other groups and individuals. More than 125,000 posters have been distributed since 1980.
