NATIONAL PRESIDENT
MRS. CLARICE E. BROWN (Chicago, Illinois)
ISSUES A CALL TO CONVENTION

THe 54th Anniversary Narional Convention of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., a business and professional women's organization, will hold its biennial meeting in "The Big Apple" [New York City], July 21-27, 1938 at the New York Statler Hotel. This Conventon is being planed to offer ample time for business, recreation, education and fellowship. Keynote speaker for the first session will be the prominent Dr. Dorothy Height, National President of the National Council of Negro Women of which Iota Phi Lambda Sorority is an affiliate.

The public educational program will highlight the prestigious Lola M. Parker Achievement Award which is bestowed upon a noteworthy woman in the field of business. This award is the highest honor the Sorority gives; prominent among its former recipients, to name a few are: Dr. Violet Marie Malone, associate professor and state leader in the Extension Education division at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture; Attorney Frankie Muse Freeman of the U.S. Civil Rights Commision; Dr Fredda Geneva H. Southall. Professor and Chairperson, Department of Afro-American and African Studies, University of Minnesota; Mrs. Freddye Henderson, owner of a Travel Bureau, Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. Era Bell Thompson, Mrs Ollie F. Cromell, Mrs. Lois Golden.

The National theme: "Women Facing Challenges in a New Decade" is befitting this point in time when unemployment, cut-offs of educational, economic and social programs have reached an all-time high. Representatives of the over 100 chapters across the United States will converge to map out and institute ideas and work programs to assist in every facet of life in the local communities from which they come. Mrs. Lola M. Parker who along with six other businesswomen founded the sorority in 1929 has consistently urged the sisterhood to emphasize comparable, quality Negro business-operated by competent people. It is her desire that the national Tutorial project, in an effort to assist youth in overcoming the lack of basic skills in the early educational years become a meaningful service to young people in all communities. This in addition to the sorority's Career Exploration activities enhances the viability of the organization.

New to the convention will be seminars from which members may receive continuing education credit. For it is in this focus that many will realize a basic need to keep abreast with the times. Likewise are activities designed for all members of one's family and the auxiliaries: Lambds, the husbands of the Iota members; Pelatai, friends of Iota members; Gems, Future Iota Girls, and FILs who are the youth.
