Elected Imperial Potentate

90th ANNUAL IMPERIAL SESSION
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
AUGUST 13-20, 1983

DENVER, COLORADO - Roswell A. Taylor, Sr. of Alexandria, Va., was elected the IMPERIAL POTENTATE of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine of North and South America and its Jurisdiction, Incorporated, Prince Hall Shriners. 
His election and installation took place on Thursday morning, August 19, 1982 at the 89th Imperial Council session, held in the grand ballroom of the Denver-Hilton Hotel in downtown Denver, Colo. As the new Imperial Potentate, Taylor will direct and supervise the activities of some 50,000 Prince Hall Shriners, and Daughters of Isis members in cities and towns all over America and overseas. These shriners and daughters hold membership in more than 400 PH shrine temples, courts, and clubs all over the world. They are in 38 states and in the USA and in foreign countries overseas, including the Bahamas Island, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Panama Canal Zone, Spain, Thailand, and West Germany.

Taylor, who is now the number one Prince Hall Shriner in the world, is a member of Magnus Temple 3, Alexandria, Va., which is one of the oldest PH temples in the imperial domain. Taylor has served his temple in many capacities including that of Illustrious Potentate. His election marks the first time that Magnus Temple 3 has had a member to serve as Imperial Potentate, and he is only the second Virginian to ascend to this lofty post in 89 years. 

In addition to his shrine activities, Taylor is also deeply involved in many other civic, fraternal, and religious activities. He holds membership on the board of directors, American Heart Association, Virginia affiliate; is a Past Superintendent of Sunday School in Lomax AME Zion Church; is a Pastmaster of Acacia Lodge 32, 31st Masonic District, a Past Grandmaster of Prince Hall Masons in the state of Virginia, a member of the board of directors of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, and is a Grand Inspector General, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, United Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, USA, PH affiliated. 

In the year 1981 at its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, the American Heart Association named Taylor as the 1981 winner of the Louis B. Russell memorial award for outstanding service. Because of his dedication and devotion to AHA Taylor received an 18" replica of the Russell Memorial Award and sculpture, for his leadership in screening and promoting more than 10,000 persons in Virginia to be screened for high blood pressure. He also was commended for getting PH Masons in Virginia and PH Shriners in the Imperial Council to donate more than $75,000 in financial grants and donations for research purpose to AHA, Virginia affiliate. 

Married to the former Miss Edna Noel Taylor, the Taylors are parents of four sons, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. 

The new Imperial Potentate is from a fraternally minded family. His wife, Edna, is involved in all phases of the adoptive rites, Prince Hall family of Freemasons; one of his sons holds membership in a PH masonic lodge; one of his brothers is a Past Grand Lecturer; another brother is involved in all of the appendant, affiliated, adoptive and concordant bodies of Prince Hall freemasonry; two of his sisters are members of Order of Eastern Star chapters; two sisters-in-law are serving the PH family of freemasons, one as a Past Grand Worthy Matron in the Grand Chapter, OES and the other as  a Past Grand Princess Captain; and an aunt living in California is a Past Grand Worthy Matron.
