ARTHUR ASHE: SUPERSTAR

has served his country as an officer in the armed forces. He is a popular commentator with ABC-TV Sports, a widely read newspaper columnist and author.

The Association of Tennis Professionals counts Arthur Ashe as a founding member and former president. His interest in young players led him to help establish the National Junior Tennis League.

Since 1975, the first year of the UNCF/Arthur Ashe Tennis Benefit, when Arthur had to run out at the last minute to buy tennis balls for the competition (held at Columbia University's gymnasium), Arthur has helped to plan and execute the tennis event that bears his name.

But, his dedication to the United Negro College Fund goes beyond the Tennis Benefit. Throughout the year, Arthur Ashe makes himself available to speak on behalf of UNCF and to visit the predominantly black colleges and universities, where he is enthusiastically received by students and faculty as a hero and a man of understanding.

We salute Arthur Ashe for all that he has accomplished and for all he has shared with his friends, tennis fans and the young people of this nation. We look forward to sharing with him many more years of a long and lasting partnership.
