The proceeds from tonight's Grambling—Morgan State Classic support the two participating colleges and fund the New York Urban League's Whitney M. Young, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Program.

Sponsored by the New York Yankees in association with the New York Urban League, the annual Classic seeks to insure the educational futures of America's minority youth and close the widening social and economic gap between Blacks and Whites in our country today.

Now in its fifth year, the Scholarship Program was established in 1977 to honor the memory of the late executive director of the National Urban League, Whitney M. Young, Jr., who served from 1961 until his death in March, 1971. One of the most persuasive strategists of the 1960's civil rights struggle, Mr. Young regarded education as the true key to freedom and progress for Blacks in America.

In addition to the traditional 10 student winners who will each receive a $1,500 scholarship, thanks to the generous support of our scholarship fund by George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees Foundation, an eleventh student has been added through a special contribution by the National Broadcasting Company, Inc.

The recipients were selected based upon a written essay, personal interview and superior academic achievement.
