MEDIA WOMEN MEET IN 17th ANNUAL CONVENTION
Atlanta, Georga

"All of us are living at a time when communications has become as vital to our existence and progress as food and shelter is to the health we cherish" stated Dwight M. Ellis, vice-president of Minority and Special Services of the National Association of Broadcasters. Addressing the Award Banquet of the 17th Annual Convention of the National Association of Media Women, Inc. at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, Ellis noted that despite "the thousands of people engaged in controlling the medi...too few are women and minorities, but rapidly growing numbers of those participating in media control are women".
He stated that Black female ownership of radio stations "rest on the shoulders of three women: Mary Bell of Detroit, Mutter Evans of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Dorothy Brunson, who owns two radio stations, WEBB in Baltimore and WIGO in Atlanta". Although, according to Ellis, the picture is bleak for minority women and men in the film industry, efforts and progress that Black women are making in print ownership are especially noteworthy. He cited Dr. Mary Ellen Strong, publisher of Black Family Magazine and the eleven Black women who publish newspapers in this country. Ellis urged concerted committment on the parts of strategically placed women and minorities and networking with others regardless of race or sex on matters of mutual concern.
