ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
When Atlanta's new airport opened in September 1980 (one mile or 1.6 kilometers from the present site), it took title of world's largest passenger terminal complex. Its twin "landslide" or domestic terminal buildings and four 26-gate domestic concourses, plus international terminal with its own six-gate concourse, initially can handle more than 55 million people per year, and 109 widebodied aircraft simultaneously. A subterranean rapid transit system will move a projected 300,000 passengers and visitors per day between terminals and concourses in under five minutes.
