the National competition are: FIRST PLACE-Dr. Ransaw; SECOND PLACE-Mr. Oliver Jackson, Teacher of the Year Finalist and Art Educator, Atlanta Public Schools and Dr. Lawrence Jones, Commissioned Muralist, Jackson State University Centennnial Mural and Art Consultation at Le Moyne-Owen College, Memphis, Tennessee (TIE) HONORABLE MENTION-Mr. John Rozelle, Commissioned Muralist and President, SANNA productions, St. Louis, Mo., and Ms. Audrey Davenport, Graphic Designer, Atlanta, Georgia (TIE).
During the commissioner ceremony, the announcement of the winning entries and the artist to be commissioned to do the Morris Brown College Centennial Mural were made. The public announcement followed a National Centennial Mural Competition that artists throughout the nation participated in during the Centennial Year Celebration. The Mural depicts the significant events and people making significant contributions to the College and society as well as important events that have taken place during the first one hundred years of Georgia's only surviving institution of higher education founded by blacks.
A distinguished committee of jurors served on the judging committee and were among a list of artists, historians, community leaders, faculty, students, alumni and friends of the College who served on the Centennial Mural Committee. The Mural Committee worked in cooperation with the Centennial committee under the direction of Chairman, Dr. W. F. Payne, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morris Brown College.
Dr. Robert Threatt, President of Morris Brown College was Chairman. Mr. Gudmund Vigtel, Director of the High Museum of Art was Co-Chairman. Bishop Frederick Hilborn Talbot served as Honorary Chairman. Bishop Talbot is Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Morris Brown and Presiding Prelate of the AME Church in Georgia. Mr. Richard Horsey was Honorary Co-Chairman. He is President of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Mr. Louis Gerland, Senior Vice-President for the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company also was on honorary Co-Chairman.
Mrs. Claude Marshall, Jr., Director of Special Markets, The Atlanta Coco-Cola Bottling Company and Mrs. M. Paulyne Morgan White, Director of Public Relations for Morris Brown College served as Planner/Process Coordinators.
