also has the No. 2 jump — 29-9. All three jumps came at the Indiana University Track Stadium. The 29-9 came during last year's National Sports Festival.

Lewis ran the 200 semifinal about 1 1/2 hours after the long jump competition. He won his heat in a wind-aided 20.15 seconds.

Again, he had a rest of about 1 1/2 hours before the final.

And Lewis was ready.

He burst out of the blocks quickly, rounded the curve in first place and kept extending his advantage until about 10 meters remained. Then, knowing he had the victory, he threw both hands in the air. That gesture probably cost him a shot at the world record of 19.72 set by Pietro Mennea of Italy in Mexico City in 1979. As it was, Lewis missed it by only .03 of a second.

Still, he Smashed the American record of 19.83 established by Tommie Smith during the 1968 Olympics.
