come to an American athlete, the Amateur Union-Sullivan award in Indianapolis on last Feb. 21. She was only the sixth woman to receive it since it was established 63 years ago in 1920.
John Heilman, President of Somerset Importers, Ltd., the Award sponsors, noted that the spunky speedster joins four previous distinguished women athletes so honored in the 16-year history of the Tanqueray Achievement Award.
"I feel it is especially significant that Mary Decker is our 1983 winner, particularly because she comes in after gaining two gold medals for America in triumphs over Soviet runners at the games in Helsinki," said Heilmann.
"Mary, I feel sure, has the strong potential to carry on another tradition of our winners. She will be in the forefront of competition for gold medals in several events at the 1984 Olympics."
The 1983 winner was accompanied to the annual awards luncheon at Gallagher's Restaurant by her longtime coach and adviser, Dick Brown, one of the chief executives of the Athletics West training ground for amateur athletes, a major wing of the Mike athletic equipment operation.
