Sugar Ray Leonard and Howard Davis, Jr. Leonard, as a junior welterweight, and Davis, as a lightweight, won U. S. Olympic Gold Medals in boxing at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. At the time they were selected for the award as co-winners, both had undefeated records as professional fighters. As an amateur, Leonard, from Palmer Park, Md., won 145 fights, losing only five with 75 bouts ending in knockouts. Davis fought 125 times as an amateur, winning 120 bouts, losing five, and gaining 57 knockouts.
