Mayor Wilson resides in Oakland with his wife Dorothy, a practice attorney. He is the father of three sons, two of whom are graduates of the University of California at Davis School of Law. 

On May 17, 1977, Lionel J. Wilson was elected as the first Black Mayor of Oakland, California. Since his election as Mayor of Oakland, Mayor Lionel Wilson has served on the Board of Directors of the League of California Cities, various committees of the United States Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities, including their Policy Committee. He was appointed to the State Comprehensive Employment Training Act Board by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the United States Court of Patents and Appeals. He maintains current membership in the League of California Cities, The United States Conference of Mayors Task Force on Cities and the National Defense, the National League of Cities, and since 1978, the National Urban Coalition Steering Committee.

n addition to service as the Chief elected official of the City of Oakland, Mayor Wilson has returned to his practice of law and is part owner of KIAZ (FM), a local jazz radio station.
