The Warriors celebrated their 20th season in the Bay Area by posting a 45-37 record, the club's best mark since the 1976-77 squad went 46-36 ... For the second consecutive season Golden State went down to the wire in the battle for a Western Conference playoff berth before being nosed out by a single game ... Not since the Phoenix Suns were 49-33 in 1971-72 had a team won as many as 45 games and not advanced to post season play ... Head Coach Alvin Attles notched his 500th NBA career coaching victory January 2 vs. Dallas to join Red Auerbach, Red Holzman, Jack Ramsay, Gene Shune and Dick Motta in the 500 win circle ... At the season's end Attles was just seven games short of his 1000th career game at the helm of the Warriors ... Bernard King (23.2-8th) and World Free (22.9-9th) became the first Warrior duo to finish among the NBA's top ten in scoring since Wilt Chamberlain (38.4-1st) and Paul Arizin (23.2-8th). did it for the Philadelphia Warriors in 1960-61 ... Golden State's 49.6% field goal figure set a franchise record, breaking the previous season's mark of 48.9% ... The free throw department was the squad's biggest problem area all year ... The Warriors tied with Los Angeles for the worst mark in the league with a 71.7% figure ... It was the team's lowest free throw percentage in 16 seasons (1964-65; 64.0%) ... The club's longest winning streak was five games and occurred on two occasions - November 13-21 and December 2-12 ... Saturday proven Golden State's most successful day of the week as the squad racked up a 14-1 record ... Honors: Bernard King became the first Warrior in four years to participate in the annual NBA All-Star game ... King capped of the season by being named to the NBA All-League second team ... In the college draft the Warriors selected Oakland product Lester Conner on the first round ... Conner topped off his senior year at Oregon State by being named the Pac- 10's Conference Player-Of-The-Year ... Following Conner Golden State chose Louisville's Derek Smith in the second round and 7-foot center Chris Engler in round three ... In June, Assistant to the President and Director of Player Personnel, Scotty Stirling announced he was leaving his position with club at the end of the month to accept the vice president of operations post with the NBA office ... With Stirling's departure Bob Bestor, formerly the club's director of marketing and communications, was elevated to Vice President of Player Personnel.

After opening the season with an impressive three game winning streak the club dropped 11 of its next 12 and finished the campaign by losing 17 of its final 24 on the way to a disappointing 30-52 overall mark ... The club was plagued by injuries and roster moves throughout the season ... The 238 player games missed due to injuries and illness set an NBA record while the 19 players that donned Warrior uniforms in 1982-83 were the most since the franchise moved West in 1962 ... Golden State, without the services of top rebounder Larry Smith for 33 games, plummeted from fourth in the circuit in rebounding in 1981-82 to 18th ... Center Joe Barry Carroll enjoyed his finest NBA campaign averaging 24.1 points, good for seventh in the league ... Purvis Short was another bright spot for the club, netting 21.4 points a contest, 19th in the circuit ... Following the end of the season Head Coach Al Attles stepped down to accept the general manager's post ... Attles, who served longer (14 seasons) and won more games (555) than any coach in Warrior history, was succeeded by John Bach, the club's assistant coach for the past four seasons.
