SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS

A brief description of each of the organizations is appropriate in order to gain a perspective on the ideology and philosophy of each organization.

• NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION

The National Bar Association (NBA), the nation's oldest and largest organization of Black attorneys, was founded in 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout its history the NBA has been in the forefront of legislative struggles and legal battles to protect the rights of Black Americans. Headquartered in Washington D.C., the NBA now has 53 affiliate chapters and a professional network of 8,500 lawyers, jurists, legal educators/administrators and law students.

• NATIONAL DENTAL ASSOCIATION

The National Dental Association (NDA) was founded in 1918 and has members in most of the 50 states. the NDA strives to reduce human suffering from dental disease, to educate the population regarding prevention of the ravages of dental disease and to constantly improve and upgrade its members' professional competence in cooperation with others health programs and agencies.

• NATIONAL BLACK NURSES ASSOCIATION

The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) was organized in 1971 to unify Black nurses adn to pool efforts and resources in considering the health status and problems of Blacks. The idea for NBNA was an outgrowth of a Black nurses' caucus at the 1970 convention of the American Nurses Association in Miami. IT has several objectives, two of which are: 1) to define and determine nursing care for Black consumers for optimum quality of care by acting as their advocate, and 2) to recruit, counsel and assist Blacks with an interest in nursing to ensure progress of Blacks in the field.

• NATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL ASSOCIATION

The National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA) was founded at Howard University in 1947, when Black pharmacists were excluded from the American Pharmaceutical Association. The NPA has chapters throughout the country and serves the 2,500 Black pharmacists in the United States. Among its goals are the recruitment of Black students for careers in pharmacy and the improvement of health care for Blacks and the poor through quality pharmacy services.

• NATIONAL PODIATRY ASSOCIATION

The national Podiatry Association (NPA) was founded in 1973 as a private, non-profit organization. NPA exists to foster the philosophy of disadvantaged/minority recruitment, retention, achievement and professional development. Its objectives include: enhancing minority visibility in colleges of podiatric medicine and the profession; insuring placement of minority practitioners in residency teaching and clinical posts; and educating the community about podiatric medical care.
