current and workable. Article 4, which deals with the duties of officers, currently states that all officers shall be members of an additional recognized national association of pharmacists, thus acknowledging the need for a bond with other professional associations on the national level.

The constitution of NPhA also stipulates that minority pharmacists and all others who have the required qualifications are eligible for membership in the association. Since its inception, NPhA has included both owner-pharmacists and employee-pharmacists in its national organization and in local and state associations and societies.

Although the first three annual meetings were held in Washington, D.C, the constitution required that the annual meetings be held each year at a time and place decided by a vote at the preceding annual meeting. Thus, the fourth annual meeting was held in Detroit, Michigan. The first movement away from Washington D.C. led to a noticeable increase in membership, the formation of an auxiliary and an awakening on the part of pharmaceutical manufacturers to the existence of the national organization. Conventions in New York City in 1951 and in Chicago in 1952 set the future pattern for holding the annual meeting in various cities throughout the country; NPhA had become a truly national organization.

Today, the National Pharmaceutical Association has grown to nearly 500 pharmacists in all sections of the country. Membership includes pharmacy graduates and faculty members from the four predominantly Black colleges and schools of pharmacy: Howard University, Washington D.C.; Texas Southern University, Houston; Florida A&M, Tallahassee; and Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans.

Since August 1972, The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) has been officially recognized as a part of the National Pharmaceutical Association. To attain its purpose and objectives, the Student National Pharmaceutical Association works to unite minority students isolated on various campuses with other minority students throughout the nation and to keep them informed of minority student involvement and activities.

The current programs of the National Pharmaceutical Association have three main thrusts. First, NPhA provides continuing education programs that foster the continuing competence of the practicing minority pharmacist at a time when changes in the profession are occurring at an unprecedented rate.

A second thrust focuses on the association's desire to perpetuate itself as a parent organization for the Student NPhA, fostering in minority students a sense of the value and social contribution of a career in the pharmacy profession.

The third thrust concerns excellence in pharmacy practice Pharmacists who succeed in practice are those who are alert to the opportunities available to them and who are able to take advantage of them. Minority problems do exist in the practice of pharmacy, but the problems are frequently an image of problems common to the total profession. To counter professional problems of this kind, NPhA invites input and membership from all interested pharmacy practitioners.

Life is a process of change and growth. The National Pharmaceutical Association has changed and will continue to change as long as it is a living, viable association of concerned professionals, dedicated to making a vital contribution tot he total health care of all of our citizens.
