PITTSUBRGH, PENNA.—Earl R. Henderson, a Department of Defense government employee for the past 33 years, has been nominated, elected, and installed as the new illustrious Potentate of Sahara Temple Nr. 2, Prince Hall Shriners in Pittsburgh, Penna.

In one of his first official acts after assuming office, the Illustrious Potentate announced the appointment of Noble Alphonse James as publicity director, charged with the responsibility of gathering and disseminating Prince Hall shrine news and photographs to area newspapers, magazines, Radio and TV news media pertaining to his program of activities and events in Sahara Temple for the next 12 months.

Known by many of his friends in the area as one of Pittsburgh's most outstanding PH Shriners, Henderson is a member of Saint Cyprian Alpha lodge Nr. 13, and is a sublime prince of the Royal Secret in St. Cyprian Consistory Nr. 4, 32nd and 33rd degrees Prince Hall Masons.

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA—Imperial Chief Rabban Earl H. Gray of this city, the world's number three Prince Hall Shriner, has been cited for outstanding performance of duty and presented this year's Vanguard award trophy, during a recent ceremony in St. Louis, Missouri.

Gray, a Past Potentate in Mocha Temple 7, Prince Hall Shriners in Richmond, is third in line for the top ranked elected post in the world-wide fraternal order. He is slated to be elected The Imperial Potentate, the number one man, in August of 1986.

In accepting the VanGuard award, announced that many Prince Hall Shrine temples and courts have made and donated financial aid grants to the Roscoe C. Washington student aid fund.

In presenting Gray to a sellout crowd, it was noted that he has been most active in civic, community, fraternal, religious and social affairs.
 
A Pastmaster in Capital City Prince Hall masonic lodge 107, 26th Masonic District, Gray also holds membership in all branches of Prince Hall freemasonry to include being a Grand Inspector General of the 33rd and last degree, United Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, USA, Prince Hall affiliated.

His religious affiliation is as elder and a member, First Presbyterian Church, USA. He also holds membership in numerous civic and professional organizations, to include duties as the administrator of Mocha Temple 7, PH Shriners, Richmond. Mocha is one of the largest 10 PH shrine temples in the world, with an on-roll membership of nearly 600 members.

Gray is married to the former Miss Jane Porter Harris of Richmond. They are parents of one daughter, Adrienne.

ABOUT SHRINDOM AND FREEMASONRY

In trying to depict to you the place of the Order of the Mystic Shrine among other fraternal organizations, I would say the Order of the Mystic Shrine stands as a preacher among a group of Christian worshippers, second to none. Because of the superior requirements to become a member of the Shrine you will find that its membership consists mostly of men of thought, of culture, and of justice.

When brought to ths country, it was deemed expedient to place it in the hands of Freemasons only, owing to the fact that Masons were regarded as a choice of the best men in the land. 

Then also, having past the ordeal of obligation, the Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine would be safer with them than with the general run of the unobligated masses. So there you can see that its place is at the apex.

May I digress to explain to you a few things about Freemasonry, the foundation upon which Shrinedom is built? Freemasonry is not only the oldest, but also, in a real sense, the mother of all similar fraternal organizations. 

Its exact origin is unknown, but according to the "old charge" delivered to candidates it is an ancient and honorable institution—ancient no doubt as having subsisted immemorial, and honorable it must be, since by a natural tendency it has served so to improve
