ETA PHI BETA SORORITY 

HISTORY
The dedication and skills of progressive organizations are increasingly needed to meet the fast growing social and economic requirements of our complex society. Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., with its creative and energetic membership has found its place among those organizations that are recognized for their achievements in cultural and civic endeavors.

Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is a National Business and Professional Women's Sorority, organized in October 1942 in Detroit, Michigan by eleven business women. These business women were: Sorors Merry Green Hubbard, Ann Porter, Lena Reed, Earline Carter, Ivy Burt Morris Banks, Dorothy Sylvers Brown, Ethel Madison, Mae Edwards Bolling Curry, Katherine Doughlas, Mattie Rankin and Atheline Shelton. Their aims were to develop closer fellowship among business and professional women.

The first officers installed by Mrs. R. Louise Grooms President-Founder of the Detroit Institute of Commerce and Eta Phi Beta Sorority's first honorary member. Merry Green Hubbard served as Basileus, Ann Porter - Anti Basileus, Ethel Madison - Tamiouchos, Dorothy Sylvers Brown - Chaplain, Earline Carter - Grammatteus, Ivy Burt Morris Banks - Guard, Mattie Rankin - Keeper of Peace and Katherine Douglas - Historian. 

THE SUMMARY (Primer of Eta Phi Beta)

A is for Accession. A group of women, who were graduates of a business college, organized Eta Phi Beta Sorority in 1942

B is for Benefit. We hope to give, in a measure, many times by aiding in community life

C is for Charity. Eta Phi Beta contributes to charitable organizations

D is for Demonstration. We hope to prove that congenial fellowship is possible among business and professional women

E is for Energy. The need is great for establishing an efficient working relation with our youth, that is helping the with their problems or future plans

F is for Fraternize. We do practic the golden rule

G is for Gratitude. We are her grateful for the patronage given us

H is for Honesty. We sincerely believe there is no honor gained thats a good and worthy name

I is for Impression. We would like to impress upon you our desire to count you among our circle of friends

J is for Justice. We all agree that justice without wisdom is impossible

K is for Knowledge. Eta Phi Beta is her seeking; and keenly aware of community problems 

L is for Loyalty. You are our apron; we are tied to you

M is for Mobility. We have an acute feeling about changes in our community

N is for Notable. Judge not by number, but what we do. Our mark may be higher than we can conveniently reach, but we are looking steadfastly in a direction with the determination of traveling in it

O is for Opportunity 

P is for Performance. Only by production will our organization be known 

Q is for Quality. With particular emphasis on improving the standards of business ethics

R is for Resoluteness. Our will is great our minds are firm

S is for Stature. To achieve equal status with other business and professional groups 

T is for Team work

U is for Urgncy. The time is now

V is for Victory. With the foresight we can win the respect business women deserve 

W is for Worth. We do feel qualified as a diversified organization to help in obtaining full economic status 

X is for Xanthropy. If we could coin a word, this would be it

Y is for Youth. The hope of the world and the leaders of tomorrow 

Z is for Zenith. That for which we stand

Membership: Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, found in Detroit, Michigan is composed of business and professional women.

Members are: Ritual, Honorary and Associate.

Purposes and Objectives
1. To promote and create congenial fellowship among business women.

2. To work for the welfare of business and professional women.

3. To improve the standards of Negro business.

4. To assist in obtaining for women the opportunity for the highest standards in all business fields.

5. To aid high school graduates by awarding scholarships to further their education in business and professional fields.

6. To contribute financially to local and national charities.

7. To promote and assist programs which are designed for improving the well being of all retarded citizens.

Philosophical Aims: 1. To have enough wisdom to think in the right channels.

2. Enough perception to see an opportunity.

3. Enough judgement to appraise it.

4. Enough energy to embrace it and make use of it.

National Projects: Our National project is mentally ratarded citizens (local and national).

We contribute as well as participate in active community life in our communities. We contribute to the United Negro College Fund, NAACP, Urban League, March of Dimes, the United Fund Drive, YWCA, YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, National Council of Negro Women and other worthwhile civic projects. The Scholarship Dance, Christmas Vespers, Founder's Day Observance and the Queen Bee Contest are annual affairs.

All Chapels hold a one day youth Career Day whereby high school students are motivated to enter professional or business fields. Leaders in various fields are used as Consultants.

National Council of Shads Clubs - Auxiliary of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Conventions: The Shad Council is composed of local Shad Clubs. The members are husbands of active sorors. They are nationalized and function independently of the Sorority. Their national convention is held concurrently with the Grand Boule. 

Conventions are held biennially. Grand Boules are held in even years and Regional Conferences in the odd years. All Chapters are entitled to representation on an equal basis.
