101-YEARS-OLD ROSINA TUCKER HEADS LISTS OF 1983 CANDACE AWARD WINNERS

New York, August 24, 1983--A 101-year-old woman heads the list of winners of the second annual Candance (Can-day-say) Award. Rosina Tucker, a lifelong labor leader from Washington,D.C who spent the majority of her life fighting for the rights of Pullman workers, is one of 12 women to win the coveted award acknowledging extraordinary achievements by Black women in the fields of Arts, Letters, Health, History, Humanitarian Work, Labor, Science, Technology, Business, Community Service, Economic Development and Education, The winners were announced today by Jewell Jackson McCabe, president of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and Al Ferro, president of Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur which sponsored the event.

The gala black-tie ceremony honoring Ms. Tucker and the other winners will take place on Wednesday evening, October 12, 1983 in the Temple of Dendur, Sackler Wing, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. 

The winners were chosen by a blue-ribbon selection committee whose members included Benjamin Hooks, executive director of the NAACP; John Jacobs, president of the National Urban League; Ernesta Procope, president, E.G. Bowman, Inc., Margaret Young, corporate director, Philip Morris, Inc.; former California congresswoman Yvonne Braithwaite Burke; and Rachel Robinson, winner of last year's Candace Award for Distinguished Service. 

Below, the winners of the second Candace Awards and a brief summary of their accomplishments: 

Labor - Rosina C. Tucker - The 101-year-old Ms. Tucker is being honored for her work as activist, author and artist. In 1920, Ms Tucker became Chairwoman of the Social Service Committee, Federation of Civic Associations, in Washington, D.C. In 1925, she became active in organizing the Washington Chapter of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. She traveled around the country for A. Philip Randolph helping to organize the Brotherhood in its early stages. She served over 30 years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Brotherhood's Ladies Auxiliary. In that capacity she helped organize school teachers, laundry workers and red caps. Ms. Tucker is still active in her church and teaches Sunday School almost every week.

Science - La Salle D. Leffall., M.D. - A surgeon, oncologist, and medical educator, Dr. Leffall has served as chairman of the Department of Surgery at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He has also been a visiting professor of surgery for numerous colleges, universities and medical institutions in the U.S. and abroad. De. Leffall has made medical teaching films and serves as a member of numerous medical associations and societies.

Health - Dr. Gloria Jackson Bacon - Dr. Bacon is the Medical Director of Clinic Associates of Chicago, Ltd., a full service medical group specializing in care for low income patients. Dr. Bacon is also the founder and director of The Clinic in Altgeld, Inc., a not-for-profit agency offering complete health care for the entire family. The Clinic in Altgeld serves as the primary medical resources for the Altgeld Gardens area. She has extensive medical background covering areas ranging from drug abuse (she served as medical consultant for the Illinois Drug Abuse Program) to birth defects (Dr. Bacon served on the Health Professional Advisory Committee of the March of Dimes in Chicago). Her writings include work on the Black Family and a piece on "Fisk University - the Black Legacy."

Humanitarian - Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark - The Candace will be awarded to Dr. Clark posthumously for her work as principal/treasurer of Clark, Phipps, Clark & Harris, Inc. A Ph.D. from Columbia University, Dr. Clark with her husband, Dr. Kenneth Clark, was founder of the Northside Center for Child Development and served as its Executive Director for 40 years. She also served on the Board of Directors of Haverford College, the Museum of Modern Art, Columbis University, The Phelps Stokes Fund and the New York City Mission Society.
