HISTORY

Maudest Walls Stewart gave birth to the idea of a national organization which has become known as National Women of Achievement, Incorporated.

In February 1975, a group of women who had achieved in various fields were assembled by Maudest Walls Stewart at her home, 3614 South MacGregor Way, Houston, Texas for the formation of the new organization. The eight charter members were Judge Alice A. Bonner, the late Stella Collins, Dr. Hortense Dixon, Eddie Marie Johnson, Lorene B. Lancelin, Maudest Walls Stewart and the late Josie B. Taylor.

The purposes as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation are: to encourage youth to strive for excellence in academic pursuits, to maintain high moral and ethical standards, and to make outstanding contributions in the fields of medicine, law, business, politics, religion, music, education, nursing, art and dentistry.

As the founding chapter's enthusiasm grew, the group invited other outstanding women to organize chapters within the state of Texas as well as other states throughout the United States. At the first national convention held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Maudest Walls Stewart became the first National President of the Organization.

National Women of Achievement, Inc. contributes to civic and community groups. Annually, scholarships are awarded to youth. An important activity of the organization's program is an annual event honoring outstanding women of achievement.
